MERION STATION, Pa. – The Monmouth University baseball team fell at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest, 11-4 at Smithson Field. MU falls to 3-11 with the loss, while SJU improves to 6-9.
Saint Joseph's starter Tyler Pallante worked 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Jack Stover went 1.1 scoreless, Dominic Cuoci added two shutout frames and two more SJU relievers combined to close out the game, allowing just one run. MU started Adam Yunginger (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), and he worked three plus innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits with two strikeouts. Jeff Paglione (Mantua, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) worked a scoreless seventh and eighth for Monmouth.
Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) and Tommy Gamble (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) each had two hits for Monmouth, with Gamble also scoring a pair of runs. Stefan Kancylarz had three hits for SJU, and four others had two hits for Saint Joseph's.
Monmouth grabbed the game's first run in a strange fashion in the second, after Gamble lined a double over the head of the left fielder and Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) dropped a base hit into right. Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) lifted a sacrifice fly to center and Gamble scored, but Perry was cut down trying to tag and go to second just seconds after Gamble scored to end the inning.
Saint Joseph's responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair on back-to-back singles by Charlie Coghlin and Taylor Boyd to go up 2-1. MU tied the game back up in the top of the third, when Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) singled and ended up at third after a double play. Hughes ripped a double on one-hop off the right field fence to chase home Alessandrine.
SJU responded with another two runs in the bottom half of the third when Deon Stafford led off with a double. Kancylarz followed with a long triple to straightaway center field and would later score on an RBI ground out to put the home team up 4-2 after three.
For the third consecutive inning in the fourth, MU got a single run via a bases loaded walk. After a Pete Papcun (Brick, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) single, a fielder's choice and a hit by pitch to Perry and a walk to Lamberton, Steve Wilgus (Woolwich, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) drew a bases loaded walk to score a run. SJU got that run back in the bottom of the frame on a Peter Sitaras sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the fifth, Saint Joseph's put the first two runners aboard, eventually scoring one on a passed ball and another on a Matt Maul RBi single to extend the SJU lead to 7-3.
Boyd singled leading off the sixth, and Sitaras followed with a walk to put the first two on for Saint Joseph's. Kancylarz put one past a diving Lamberton to score a run, and John Brue came up two batters later and pulled a long 3-run home run into the right field bullpens to push the Saint Joseph's lead to 11-3.
Christian Holland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) dropped a single into center field in the ninth to score Wilgus to make the final score 11-4 in favor of Saint Joseph's.
