LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Justin Robinson (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston) has been named Most Valuable Player of the 2015 AdvoCare Invitational after breaking the tournament scoring record with 77 points in three games. Robinson was also named to the 2015 AdvoCare Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The mark Robinson broke was originally set by former NBA first-round pick Michael Beasley with Kansas State in 2007 (73 points). Robinson started his weekend with 22 points in the programs first-ever win over a ranked opponent as MU beat #17 Notre Dame 70-68. The junior knocked in the game-winning free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining, and ended up with 22 on 4-11 FG and 14-15 from the foul line with three rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The point guard followed that up by tying a career-high for the third time this season with 28 points in a three-point loss to Dayton, hitting 7-of-15 from the floor and 5-7 from three-point range along with 9-10 from the charity stripe. He contributed four boards and two assists.
Finally, he broke the scoring record with a dagger three in the final minute to propel Monmouth to a third place finish in the tournament and a win over Pac-12 member USC. Against the Trojans, Robinson finished with 27 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals on 9-15 shooting and another five threes. He shot 48.8% from the floor on the weekend, 62.5% from beyond the arc and 27-29 from the foul line, good for 93.1% with 14 boards, nine assists and five steals.
Robinson and the Hawks are back on the floor Friday night at Canisius in the first conference game of the season. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m. on ESPN3.
