BOSTON, MA – Former Monmouth right-handed pitcher Pat Light has been added to the Boston Red Sox 40-man roster, the organization announced Friday. Light pitched at Monmouth from 2010-2012 and was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, 37th overall.
“This is quite an honor for Pat, I'm very proud of him and happy for him,” said head coach Dean Ehehalt. “Our program and present team are extremely happy. We are glad he's one of us.”
Light pitched to a 14-14 record in his three years at Monmouth. He tossed 234.1 innings and posted a 3.84 ERA with 196 career strikeouts, a number that puts him in the top-five in Monmouth history. He walked just 52 with nine career complete games.
The right-hander was a 1st Team All-NEC selection as a junior and was named to the All-Tournament team that same year in addition to earning NJCBA Pitcher of the Year honors. He was on USA Baseball's Golden Spike Award Watch List, and became the highest drafted player in the history of Monmouth University and the Northeast Conference.
Last season, Light pitched for both the AA Portland Sea Dogs and the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox, finishing 3-5 with a 3.88 ERA. He struck out 67 in 62.2 innings with a WHIP of 1.37. Light becomes the third Hawk ever to join a major league roster behind current Baltimore Orioles reliever Brad Brach and former San Francisco Giants pitcher Ed Halicki.
“Congratulations to Pat, he has worked extremely hard for this,” added Ehehalt. “He's always been a hard worker and has really progressed nicely. This has been a goal of his for a long time and it's good to see a guy with goals fulfill his dream. When we recruited him this is what he talked about and it's good to see it has gotten to this point.”
