MEN'S TENNIS COMPETITIVE AT PRINCETON'S FARNSWORTH IVY PLUS

PRINCETON, N.J. – Monmouth University sophomores Przemyslaw Filipek (Bedzin, Poland/Second Lo [Silesia]), Bee Kumthonkittikul (Bangkok, Thailand/Pendleton School) and Luke Adamus (Mosman, New South Wales/Redlands) each picked up wins as the men's tennis team kicked off its fall campaign at Princeton's Farnsworth Ivy Plus Tournament, last weekend. The highly contested event featured 128 players from 22 different schools from around the nation.

"Overall, our guys did a good job of competing with players from top-40 teams in the country," commented head coach Cory Hubbard. "It was a great experience to be included in such a great tournament. Victor played the best match I have seen from him and went toe-to-toe with a player ranked top-10 in the country. Filipek had a good win against a player that plays for a top-three team and lost a three-set match with a player from Dartmouth who is ranked in the region. Bee had a win against a member of Michigan's squad, while Luke picked up a victory against Dartmouth's five-star recruit, both good results for them. This weekend will be another challenge as we go to Penn Invitational and compete against more players from nationally ranked teams."

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 2014 Player of the Year, Victor Pugliese (Boulogne, France (CNED [San Diego]) defeated the Ivy League Player of the Year and preseason national No. 8 singles player, Winston Lin, of Columbia 6-3 in the opening set. With the second set score deadlocked at 5-5, Pugliese suffered an injury and eventually fell 7-6 (4). With Lin winning 3-0 in the third set, Pugliese withdrew due to his injury.

Playing in the Nassau draw bracket, Filipek took Dartmouth's Chris Kipouras to the limit, but eventually fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, the second year Hawk earned a 6-4 first set victory over Brown's Gregory Garcia. Filipek held a 3-2 lead when his counterpart retired due to injury. Following a bye round, the Poland native retired in the first set against Yale's Ziqi Wang.

Kumthonkittkul started his second year at Monmouth with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) victory over Michigan's Tyler Gardiner, but fell in the second round to Princeton's Mohamed El Tonbari in a three-set affair, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3), while Adamus, playing in an extra match, downed Max Fliegner of Dartmouth, 7-6, 6-2.
