WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.-The Monmouth track and field teams are competing in multiple events this weekend. Partial teams were sent to the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kansas, the Moravian Greyhound Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., and the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
In Kansas, junior Errol Jeffrey (Bronx, N.Y./Transit Tech [Bronx C.C.]) placed third in the men's shot put with a distance of 17.71 meters (58 feet 1.25 inches). The winner won by only .20 meters, exactly eight inches. Junior Rachel Aliotta (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) placed ninth in the women's shot put with a distance of 14.27 meters (46 feet 10 inches).
Seniors Chris Rutherford (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Rachel Watkins (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) both qualified for the 400 meter hurdles tomorrow afternoon. Watkins clocked in a 1:01.52 in the race and Rutherford ran a 54.36. Watkins also placed second in the high jump with a height of 1.73 meters (5 feet 8 inches).
Sophomore Zach Torrell (Manahawkin, N.J./Lacey Township) placed eighth in the javelin throw with a distance of 59.96 meters (196 feet 9 inches). Junior Joey Marini (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) placed ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 14.41 meters (47 feet 8 inches).
At the Greyhound Invitational, the Hawks has second, third, fifth and seventh-place finishes in the hammer throw. Junior Tilah Young (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) placed second with a throw of 49.25 meters (161 feet 7 inches), and junior Qiyana Hill (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) placed third with a distance of 48.73 meters (159 feet 10 inches).
Sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) placed fifth in the event with her throw of 43.55 meters (142 feet 10 inches), and sophomore Taylor Johnson (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) placed seventh with a distance of 41.22 meters (135 feet 3 inches).
In the women's javelin throw, sophomore Kelsey Reese (Deptford, N.J.Paul VI [George Mason]) won with a distance of 43.96 meters (144 feet 3 inches), and freshman Faith Blamon (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) placed second in the event with a throw of 41.86 meters (137 feet 4 inches). Junior Haley Knaub (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth [Northfield Mount Hermon]) placed third with a distance of 41.69 meters (136 feet 10 inches), and senior Anne Marie Moccia (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) placed seventh with a throw of 37.62 meters (123 feet 4 inches).
For the men, sophomore Kevin Gilhuly (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheeran) placed second among collegians and fourth overall with a throw of 64.83 meters (212 feet 7 inches), and freshman McLean Lipschutz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) placed third among collegians and fifth overall with a distance of 63.79 meters (209 feet 3 inches).
The hammer throw saw senior Ryan Snyder (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) place fourth with a throw of 49.69 meters (163 feet) sophomore Taylor Bernstein (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville Township) place eighth with a distance of 47.65 meters (156 feet 3 inches).
The Larry Ellis Invitational had sophomore Alex Leight (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) run a 1:53.88 in the 800 meter run, and junior Kelsey Maher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) run the 5K with a time of 17:58.
Competition at all meets resumes tomorrow morning.
