WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- The Monmouth track and field teams traveled to Landover, Md. to participate in the Northeast Conference Track and Field Championships.
The women accumulated 42.5 points while the men accrued 37.5 points. Both teams are in first place after the first day of competition.
Head coach Joe Compagni said of the first day, "It is nice to have a small
lead and qualifiers for the finals in every event. We have 13 finals
tomorrow, though, and a lot of focused work left to do to have a
successful championship meet."
The women won five events on the day. Sophomore Kate Frye (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) won the 400 meter run with a time of 58.15. Senior Emily MacEwen (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) won the 800 meter by a time of 2:15.49, and senior Amanda Eller won the mile race with a time of 5:06.81. Junior Mariah Toussaint won the 200 meter with a time of 25.28 seconds. All four of the women qualified for the final round of competition tomorrow.
Other notable mentions are junior Tilah Young (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat), senior Symmone Fisher, and junior Rachel Aliotta (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) placing second, third and fourth respectively in the weight throw. Young threw a distance of 17.12 meters (56 feet 2 inches), Fisher threw 16.49 meters (54 feet 1.25 inches), and Aliotta threw 16.48 meters (54 feet 1 inch).
Senior Rachel Watkins came in third in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.92 seconds and third in the high jump with a distance of 1.67 meters (5 feet 5.75 inches). Toussaint won the long jump with a distance of 5.70 meters (18 feet 8.5 inches) and placed third in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.70 seconds.
On the men's side of events, there were four qualifiers for the final rounds of certain events tomorrow. Sophomore Ben Boyd (Port Murray, N.J./West Morris Central) won the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.19 seconds. He also placed fourth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.40 seconds. Junior Jalen Walker (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) won the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.14 seconds. His time is an IC4A Championship qualifier.
Junior Errol Jeffrey (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx CC) won the shot put with a distance of 17.41 meters (57 feet 1.5 inches). Senior Shane Carle (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) placed third with a distance of 16.9 meters (55 feet 8.25 inches). Sophomore Taylor Bernstein (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville Township) placed fourth with a distance of 15.84 meters (51 feet 11.75 inches).
Junior Joseph Marini placed third in the long jump with a distance of 6.67 meters (21 feet 10.75 inches).
Competition resumes tomorrow morning at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex at 9 a.m.
