WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Former Monmouth University men's soccer star goalkeeper Bryan Meredith has signed with the New York Cosmos, the team recently announced. The goalkeeper from Scotch Plains, N.J., joins the first-place North American Soccer League club following recent stints with Seattle Sounders FC and IK Brage (Sweden).
“It's nice to be back close to home to play for the club that started this region's love for soccer,” said Meredith. It's good to get into an organization that's trying to do something special in the area and get into the MLS. Hopefully I can help the club win a championship.”
Meredith claimed a pair of all-region first team honors earned two All-Northeast Conference honors at Monmouth. A captain as a senior, he led the NEC in goals against average (0.70), save percentage (84.2%) and shutouts (11) in 2010. Meredith, who was named the NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player in helping the Hawks advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, ended his stellar collegiate career with 36 shutouts and a 44-7-10 record.
“I think this is a wonderful opportunity for Bryan,” said Monmouth Men's Soccer Head Coach Robert McCourt. “The Cosmos are a historic name in soccer. Bryan has had some amazing playing and life experiences in Seattle and in Sweden. Signing for the Cosmos lets Bryan play professional soccer close to home. It will be fun to get out and watch him play.”
Meredith helped lead Monmouth to four-straight Northeast Conference Regular Season Titles and back-to-back league tournament crowns. The Hawks were ranked in the NSCAA National Rankings for the entirety of his senior season.
