WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Jill Vogl (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) scored her first career goal but it was not enough as the Monmouth University field hockey team fell to American, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Jacobs Field.
The Hawks, who will open up Northeast Conference play next Sunday at Saint Francis (Pa.), wraps up the non-conference portion of their schedule at 2-10 after battling the Eagles, the fourth team MU has faced that has been included in at least one of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Coaches Polls.
Monmouth broke the ice with 11 minutes to go in the first half. Vogl along with classmate Chelsea Mann (Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack) started down the left side of the field. Vogl dished off to Mann, who sent it back to Vogl in the circle where she capped off the give-and-go with her first career points.
Mid-way through the second half, the Eagles registered the equalizer when Gina Hofmann finished off a penalty corner, firing a shot past Monmouth's goalkeeper Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley). Eight minutes later, Shelly Montgomery recorded the game-winning goal with her strike from straight out.
Alex Carroll (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) recorded four shots for the Blue and White, all reaching cage, while Hannah Loux (Souderton, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) registered a pair of shots of her own.
Mathews made two saves in the loss, while her counterpart, Stephanie Burry, recorded four saves in the win for the Eagles.
American outshot Monmouth 13-7, while also holding the advantage in penalty corner opportunities, 11-4.
