WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Juniors Jacob Rubinstein (Ocean Township,
N.J./Ocean), Francois "Paco" Navarro (Paris, France/William Carey) and Joseph
Schmid (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) each found the back of the net as the
Monmouth University men's soccer team defeated nationally-ranked No. 20
Northwestern, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon in an 80-minute scrimmage on The Great
Lawn. The Hawks scored all three goals in the second half, and never trailed
after Rubinstein's tally in the 49th minute.
Rubinstein got the scoring started in the 49th minute, taking a pass
from the midfield from Edney Derrick (Kumasi, Ghana/KNUST University), before
beating the goalkeeper to the lower left corner.
Navarro scored off a free kick from 25 yards out, beating the keeper low to the
near post in the 69th minute. The Wildcats drew to within one goal
when Chris Ritter scored on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. But
the Hawks got some insurance in the 77th minute when Ryan Clark
(Freehold, N.J./Freehold) played a ball from inside the box to fellow captain
Schmid on the right side, who beat the Wildcats' goalkeeper inside the opposite
post to account for the final 3-1 score.
Alex Blackburn (Natick, Mass./Natick) made one save in keeping the Wildcats off
the scoreboard in the first half. Stephen
Graziani (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) also made one save in the second half, with
the only damage being the penalty kick.
The Hawks get one final
tune-up in a scrimmage at Bucknell on Saturday, before opening the regular
season at Towson on Friday, August 24.
