Branch, N.J.- Monmouth University's women's lacrosse team (0-3) were
overpowered by Stony Brook (4-0) 19-4 on Kessler Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Seawolves were led by junior Demmianne Cook's nine goals while midfielder
Claire Peterson had seven points on one goal and six assists. Stony Brook, who
is off to its best start in program history, held a 34-16 advantage in shots.
Stony Brook built a 13-1 lead by halftime, including leading 8-0 with 13:44 to
play. Senior Sam Lillo (Short Hills,
N.J./Milburn) broke the scoring run at the 11:59 mark with an assist going to
Hawk freshman Taylor King (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga). SBU scored five unanswered goals
to end the first frame, taking a 12 goal lead into the break.
The teams traded goals early in the second half with freshman Karlee Dean (Medford
Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) getting her first collegiate score with 25:29 to play in
regulation. After two Peterson goals, Monmouth got back to back goals from
seniors Erica Abendschoen (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) and Molly O'Brien
(Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) midway through the second half. Cook scored
the last three goals of the game to finish the scoring at 18-4.
O'Brien led the Hawks with two points on a goal and an assist. Sophomore
defender Lauren Johnson (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) recorded a pair of caused turnovers
and three ground balls. The Seawolves benefitted by 26 MU turnovers, while
committing 16 of their own. Each team
controlled 10 draws, with Dean and Lillo each getting four for The Blue &
White. Two Stony Brook goalies combined
for eight saves as MU freshman Katie Donohoe (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross
Catholic Secondary) made seven stops for the Hawks.
Monmouth will face Saint Joe's on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Philadelphia.
