HAMDEN, Conn. - Alex Carroll (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional), Kimmy Baligian (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and Tara Brown (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood) each registered a goal, while Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) recorded her first shutout of the season as the Monmouth University field hockey team defeated Quinnipiac University, 3-0, Friday afternoon in Northeast Conference action. The Hawks (3-11), who outshot the Bobcats (8-5, 1-1 NEC) 18-4 and held a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners, evened their NEC record to 1-1 on the season.
"It was an excellent game and a total team effort," said head coach Carli Figlio following the victory. "These girls made a decision to play our game and what we have been working on all season showed in the full 70 minutes today."
Monmouth, which peppered Quinnipiac's goalkeeper Nicole Lewis with 13 first-half shots, got on the board in the 14th minute when junior Trish O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort) inserted a penalty corner to rookie Orla Macken (Dublin, Ireland/Rathdown School). The freshman then dished the ball off to Carroll who blasted a shot to the back of cage for her second goal of the season, which proved to be the eventual game-winning tally.
The Hawks added to their advantage 10 minutes into the second half when Brown sent a feed to Amanda Schoenfeld (West Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) where the sophomore then found Baligian, who connected for her second goal of the year. MU added an insurance marker in the 64th minute when Carroll's shot on cage that pushed away by Lewis caromed to Michelle Pieczynski (Doylestown, Pa./Central Buck West). The senior settled the ball and then found Brown alone in the circle where she notched her second goal of the season, which capped off the scoring for the Blue and White.
Mathews made one save to post her fifth career clean sheet, while Lewis made nine saves for QU in the losing effort.
Monmouth will conclude its seven-game road swing as battles Sacred Heart on Sunday at noon.
