O'DWYER'S LATE GOAL LIFTS FH PAST TEMPLE, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA, PA. - Sophomore Patricia O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort) scored with three seconds left in regulation to allow the Monmouth University field hockey team to escape with a 2-1 victory over Temple University, Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field.  The Hawks, who played three games in the last five days, improve to 7-4 with the win, while the Owls fall to 3-7 on the season.

With 10 seconds remaining in the final frame, the Hawks were awarded their only penalty corner opportunity of the half.  Senior Kayleigh Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) sent the ball to sophomore Alex Carroll (Oceanport, Shore Regional) who set up O'Dwyer for the game-winner, her fourth tally of the year.

"Today was a complete package of skill, tactic, and heart," head coach Carli Figlio said after the victory.  "We held strong all game and executed our set plays which helped lead us to the victory over a talented Temple team."

Monmouth broke the ice in the 25th minute when graduate Morganne Firmstone (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) sent a penalty corner insert to Carroll who blasted a shot from the left side past Temple's starting goalkeeper, Lizzy Millen, for her fifth strike of the season and a 1-0 Hawks' lead.

Starting the second half down one, the Owls tied the game 20 minutes into the frame when Tori Cox connected on a shot off a penalty corner knotting the score at 1-1.

Sophomore Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) made seven saves in cage for the Hawks, while defenders Melissa Murphy (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) and Nicole Manziano (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Township) each added a defensive save.  Millen turned away six shots for Temple in over 54 minutes of action and Hale Mitchell, who allowed the game-winning goal, did not make a save in her 15 minutes in the Owls' cage.

Temple outshot MU, 13-12, and held a slight advantage on penalty corners, 5-4.

Monmouth returns home to conclude its non-conference slate as it hosts Georgetown on Sunday, October 2nd at noon on So Sweet A Cat Field.
