BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-
Monmouth sophomore Vincent DuVernois (Springfield, Pa./Springfield)
claimed 12th place at the NCAA East Preliminary Round this weekend at Robert C. Haugh
Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University.
DuVernois' throw of 223' 7" (64.14) was 12
th in the field of 48,
earning him a bid to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held
on June 8-11 at Drake University. The
sophomore's throw is second in school history only to 2008 Olympic Trials Champion
Bobby Smith. Smith was also the last
male track athlete at Monmouth to earn All-America honors for Monmouth in
2005. DuVernois will have that
opportunity when he faces off against the nation's elite in Des Moines, Iowa.
"I'm very happy for Vince and for our throws coach Abe Flores," said head coach
Joe Compagni. "They have worked very
hard together every day since Vince arrived last year. He is someone who does all the little things
right everyday and he has continued to improve a great deal from last year."
Battling wind and rain, which knocked power out all over Bloomington, DuVernois
fouled on his first throw and hit a 65m effort on his second. Needing a big third throw to advance to the
final group of 16, he unleashed a throw of 68.14m to move on. He and the other 15 finalists competed in
three more rounds of throws and his mark held up to earn him 12
th.
The preliminary round features 48 competitors in each event, with the top 12
advancing to the NCAA Championships.
Monmouth has two athletes competing tomorrow, Mary Wilks (Bridgeton,
N.J./Bridgeton) and Lindsey Walsh (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape), in the javelin and
high jump.
