The Monmouth University men's tennis team defeated Fairfield University, 4-3 and fell to Sacred Heart, 4-3 in a pair of matches this week.
The Hawks and Stags split the singles points, but Monmouth took the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. MU won three of the singles points, lead by junior Laurence Heads (Stockton-on-Tees, England/Repton School) in the first flight. Heads needed three sets to edge Dan Sauter, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
David Sherwood (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) earned a point for the Blue and White at fourth singles, winning in straight sets against the Stags Rob Ferrante. At sixth singles, Stephen Suboleski won 6-4, 6-0, against Reece Breault.
Monmouth won the second doubles match as the tandem of and Harveer Bhalla (Buckinghamshire, England/Dr. Challoner's Grammar School) and Sherwood defeated Fairfield's Zlobinsky and Ferrante, 8-2. Amar Subasic (Sarajavo, Bosnia/Austin Peay) and Subasic edged Merinder and Sauter, 9-8, to earn the decisive doubles point for the Hawks.
The Hawks lost their first Northeast Conference match of the spring season, falling to the Pioneers, 4-3, after SHU won three singles matches and two of the three doubles contests.
In the second singles flight, sophomore Amar Subasic (Sarajavo, Bosnia/Austin Peay) dropped the first set, but stormed back to knock off Nick Mazzarese in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Harveer Bhalla (Buckinghamshire, England /Dr. Challoner's Grammar School) earned the Blue and White another singles point with his win over Michael Syer, 7-6, 6-0, in the third slot.
David Sherwood (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) tallied the Hawks third point in the match with his victory over Cole Conrad, at fourth singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
MU won the second doubles match as the duo of and Bhalla and Sherwood took down Syer and Conrad, 8-5. In the first and third doubles tilts, the Pioneers beat the Hawks 9-8, to take the decisive doubles point.
