MEN'S BASKETBALL ANNOUNCES STAFF CHANGES FOR 2010-11

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University head men's basketball coach Dave Calloway, who is entering his 14th season as the Hawks' head coach in 2010-11, has announced the addition of Kevin Murphy and Tahj Holden to the coaching staff. In addition, former Monmouth star guard Chris Kenny will take on the duties of Director of Basketball Operations. Ron Krayl will be entering his 34th season on the Monmouth bench, the second-longest tenured assistant coach at the same University in the nation.

Murphy, who was an assistant coach at Seton Hall for the past four seasons is now entering his eighth season in the college coaching ranks, as he also logged three years at Manhattan College prior to his stint with the Pirates.

During his four years at the BIG EAST institution, Murphy was responsible for all scouting, scouting reports, individual and player improvement and recruiting, which included the recruitment of Eugene Harvey, a unanimous BIG EAST All-Rookie Team selection in 2007. In addition, Seton Hall, which won 19 games last season, earned a berth in the 2010 NIT.

Murphy had a hand in all aspects of the Manhattan program since joining the Jaspers in the summer of 2003.  He was in charge of all strength and conditioning programs, individual instruction, opponent scouting, film exchange, scheduling, team travel, budget and academics, among numerous other duties.

Murphy helped lead Manhattan to two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season championships, as well as the 2004 MAAC Tournament title and NCAA berth, and the third round of the 2006 NIT.

From 2001-03, Murphy worked at the University of Kentucky as the Special Assistant to the Men's Basketball Coach.  He was responsible for film exchange, scouting, administrative duties and various other tasks for head coach Tubby Smith. During his time at Kentucky, the Wildcats went to the 2002 Sweet 16 and the 2003 Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Murphy has experience working the Bobby Gonzalez and Tubby Smith basketball camps, handling many of the administrative duties. He has also volunteered at the 2002 World Championships of Basketball in Indianapolis, Ind.

Murphy is a 2000 graduate of Kentucky with a bachelor's degree in communications. He received his masters of education in sports management from Kentucky in 2003. While an undergraduate student at Kentucky, he was a four-year team manager.

Murphy and his wife, Kyla, have a two-year old daughter named Avery.

Holden, who served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the past two seasons, was named an assistant coach for the Hawks. A former University of Maryland basketball standout, and Red Bank-native, Holden joined the Monmouth program in the fall of 2008.

The former Red Bank Regional High School star was a four-year letterwinner for Gary Williams at Maryland, and played in all 36 games during the Terrapins' 2002 NCAA National Championship season.

Prior to joining Monmouth, Holden was the Assistant Varsity Coach, as well as eighth grade basketball coach at La Jolla Country Day School in San Diego, California. While at La Jolla, Holden also served as the junior varsity coach in 2006-07.

Holden, who played in 128 career games for the Terrapins, made four NCAA Tournament appearances while in College Park, including two Final Fours. After his playing career at Maryland, Holden played professionally in Istanbul, Turkey. A leader both on and off the court, Holden also served as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council for Maryland, as well as Vice-President for the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

Holden, who was an all-state selection by the Associated Press while at Red Bank Regional High School, won a gold medal with the United States U-17 National Team at the World Youth Games in 1998.

Holden, who earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications in 2007 from Maryland, and his wife Carrie live in Bradley Beach.

Kenny, who will assume to role of Director of Operations, finished his playing career in 2006, as the Hawks won their fourth overall Northeast Conference championship, and second during Kenny's tenure. The guard became the 15th player in Monmouth's Division I history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau, and once held the NEC record for career games played, with 124. While Kenny was a member of the Hawks' program, Monmouth posted a 71-53 overall record, and captured two conference regular season titles, two conference tournament championships, and made a pair of appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

During his four seasons on the hardwood in West Long Branch, Kenny amassed 1,027 career points, possibly none more memorable than his game-winning layup in Monmouth's 49-48 Northeast Conference Championship win at Fairleigh Dickinson in 2006. Kenny, who was named All-Tournament, then paced the Blue and White to a 71-49 victory over Hampton in the NCAA Opening Round, as the senior connected on an Opening Round record 6-of-9 three-point attempts, in the Hawks' first NCAA Tournament win.

Kenny finished fourth all-time on Monmouth's three-pointers made list (195), in 124 career games, and added 304 rebounds, as well. The guard finished eleventh all time in both career assists (209) and career steals (115).

Kenny, who connected on over 40.0-percent from the floor for his career, helped lead Monmouth to the NCAA First Round appearance against No. 2 seed Mississippi State, in Orlando, Florida in 2004. He received his bachelor's degree in education from Monmouth in December of 2006.

Krayl, a mainstay at Monmouth University, is in his 34th season on the Hawks' basketball staff. Krayl, who has been on the Monmouth sidelines since 1977, is regarded as the architect of the vaunted Hawks' defense.

During his stay in West Long Branch, Krayl has helped coach the Hawks to four Northeast Conference tournament titles and four trips to the NCAA Tournament. He has also helped pilot the Hawks to their first two NEC regular-season titles.

Krayl joined the Hawks' coaching staff in 1977-78, under then head coach Ron Kornegay. Krayl helped Monmouth University make the transition to the Division I level during the 1983-84 season, and assisted Kornegay to a 129-130 overall record, including a 25-4 season in 1980-81.

Krayl is the second-longest tenured assistant coach at one institution in the country, only second to Associate Head Coach Bernie Fine at Syracuse.
