FAIRFIELD, Conn.- A second half three goal surge propelled Sacred Heart (7-4 overall (5-0 NEC) past Monmouth University's (5-7 (3-2) women's lacrosse team by a score of 8-5 on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks, who have dropped consecutive games for the first time since early March, were victimized by 19 turnovers in the loss.
Monmouth went up 2-0 on goals 19 seconds apart from seniors Perry DeWitt (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and Shawn Evans (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) five minutes in to the first half. The Pioneers answered with back to back goals to tie it at 2-2. Evans notched her second score of the half at the 8:09 mark to give MU a 3-2 advantage at halftime.
It took Sacred Heart less than two minutes to tie the game at 3-3 but the lead was short lived as junior Carissa Franzi (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) regained the lead for the Hawks on an unassisted goal 27 seconds later. The two teams traded goals before SHU notched three straight goals to build a 7-5 lead with 9:35 to play in regulation. Monmouth would not be able to even the score while Pioneer Carissa Houser tallied her fourth goal of the game to finish the scoring at 8-5.
Evans had two goals for the Hawks with Franzi, DeWitt and Olivia Salata (Broomall, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) each registering markers. Franzi also had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in the loss.
Sacred Heart's Hauser led all scorers with four goals and two assists for six points.
Pioneer netminder Chelsea Wagner had 13 saves in the game while MU's Kirby Mundorf (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keogh) had nine. Monmouth was outshot 23-20 in the contest.
The Hawks will step out of conference play for the last time this season when they travel to in-state rival Rutgers on Wednesday.
