WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Behind a pair of goals from senior
Ali Kliment, the Monmouth University women's soccer team defeated Bryant University 3-0 on Senior Day on The Great Lawn on Sunday afternoon. Following a scoreless opening half, the Hawks netted three straight scores in the second stanza to improve to claim the home victory, and improved to 5-3-2 in Northeast Conference action.
Despite the victory, Monmouth finished in a tie for fourth place in the NEC standings with Central Connecticut State, but loses out on the league postseason due to the head-to-head tiebreaker.
The result, which gives Monmouth five consecutive seasons with double-digit victories, improved the Hawks' overall mark to 10-6-2.
"Today was a good team effort for us," stated head coach
Krissy Turner, who earned her 150th career victory as a head coach. "It is always terrific to send the seniors out on a win."
With the score knotted at zero, Monmouth got on the board just 3:37 into the second half when senior
Mary Wilks found classmate
Kim Malecki down the right flank of the field. Malecki, who cut inside a defender, delivered a pass across the top of the box to sophomore Stacey Kadell, who fired a shot into the far netting for her first score of the season.
Monmouth extended its lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute when the Hawks played a short corner to senior
Gianna Russo, whose cross found Wilks in the box. Following Wilks' header on goal, which was blocked wide to Kliment, the defender fired a shot into the far post for the score.
The Hawks pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 70th minute when junior
Tracey Biederstadt played a ball into the box for Wilks, who was taken down for a penalty kick. Kliment, who was 3-for-3 in penalty kicks last season, stepped in and delivered the score.
Senior goalkeeper
Lia Fierro, who upped her program-record for career shutouts to 36, made two stops for the Hawks, while her counterpart, Kelsi Jacob, made four saves for the Bulldogs.
Monmouth, now 6-1-1 at home on the year, outshot Bryant (5-13-2, 3-6-1 NEC) 16-5 in the match, including 11-1 in the opening half. The Hawks also held a 7-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.
