LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Monmouth University field hockey team had its five-game win streak snapped by Northeast Conference rival Rider, 3-0 on Friday afternoon at Rider's New Turf Field. With the loss, Monmouth falls to 13-4 and 5-1 in NEC action, while the Broncs improve to 13-3 and 6-0 in league play.
"We made some mistakes that hurt us," said head coach Carli Figlio. "It was a tough adjustment playing on this field turf, so now we look forward to Robert Morris, and correcting those mistakes in preparation for the tournament."
Rider took a 1-0 lead 18:51 into game when Marlaine Schneider took the ball down the right side and sent a pass into the circle to Jackie Adams. Adams then found Megan Pisani who tipped the ball past Monmouth senior goalkeeper Melissa Katz, which snapped Katz's scoreless streak at 316:59 minutes.
The Broncs added to their lead 9:48 into the second half, when Alicia Govannicci found Sandra Penas in front of the net, who shot it between the legs of Katz for a 2-0 lead. The Broncs added to their less than 15 minutes later when Pisani registered her second score of the game off a feed from Virginia Egusquiza to give the Broncs a 3-0 advantage.
Katz turned away six shots and freshman Ali Askinas registered a defensive save for the Hawks, while Rider's Rebecca Lotito made two saves in the shutout.
The win clinches the regular season championship for Rider and will host next week's Northeast Conference Tournament, while Monmouth locks itself as the second seed.
Monmouth concludes its regular season schedule on Sunday, October 31st, as it hosts Robert Morris on senior day, starting at noon.
