WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University rising junior goalkeeper Lia Fierro was recently named to the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Team of the Week VII. Competing for the Millburn Magic, Fierro has helped push her side into the playoffs, as in the East, Millburn (4-4-1 WPSL East) qualified for the eight-team conference playoffs (the first time in team history).
"Lia is having a terrific summer with the Millburn Magic," stated Hawks' head coach Krissy Turner. "The experience she is getting with them should allow her to maintain and improve upon what she has already accomplished in her first two years at Monmouth."
Fierro was tabbed the WPSL Co-Player of the Week, as the Monmouth keeper made a succession of sharp stops in the 1-0 win over the Mutiny, but saved the best for second half injury time, getting down low to her left to save at point-blank range to earn the shut-out victory. Former Ohio State star Lisa Collison (Ohio Premier), the all-time leading goal scorer for The Ohio State University & U-20 Canadian international, was also named WPSL Co-Player of the Week.
In her first two seasons at Monmouth, Fierro has registered 15 shutouts in 40 career matches, and was named the 2007 Northeast Conference Tournament MVP after posting a pair of blankings as the Hawks advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Fierro, a native of Millburn, New Jersey, has recorded a 0.96 goals-against-average, and a 24-9-5 overall mark in net.
