OCEAN, N.J. ? Hosting its second home competition in three matches, the Monmouth University men's tennis were blanked by the Concordia Clippers, 7-0, on Thursday afternoon in Ocean, N.J. While the Blue and White picked up a victory at second doubles, all other matchups lost. MU's spring championship season record dropped to 2-10 while Concordia moved to 8-3 overall.
Posting the only win on the afternoon at second doubles, the duo of freshman Laurance Heads (Stockton-on-Tees, England/Repton School) and senior Vik Gupta (Princeton, N.J./Princeton Day) narrowly defeated the Clippers' team of Kim and Belhadj, 8-6. The Hawks dropped first and third doubles, to lose the overall doubles point, with the first doubles pair of senior Benjamin Evenden (Cresco, Pa./Ridgewood, N.J.) and freshman Ian Terpilowski (Mount Macedon, Victoria, Australia/Braemar College) coming closest to success, just being edged out, 8-6.
In singles action, the Hawks were kept off the scoreboard by the Clippers, marking only the second time all season Monmouth has not notched a point in singles action in a match. Evenden was drubbed at first singles by Concordia's Grubin, 6-0, 6-0, while Heads was soundly defeated by the Clippers' Malobicky, 6-2, 6-0 in third singles.
In second singles action, Gupta provided the closest game of the afternoon, pushing his first set to the limit before falling, 7-6. He then lost his second set, 6-2, dropping his singles record to 2-10 overall.
The bottom three singles matches were all soundly beaten, as senior Tim McLane (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Seven Bridges Prep) provided the closest matchup, while being defeated, 6-1, 6-3 at fifth singles to Concordia's Kim.
The Monmouth men will return to action on Sunday, April 5th, when they travel to Mount St. Mary's for an afternoon of double header action with the women's team playing on the same courts. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
