The Hawks corralled a 29-23 lead with 2:42 left on Waite's full court drive, but the Pirates answered with four Michael Freeman points to end the half and pull Hampton within 29-27 at the intermission.
After Monmouth opened a four-point edge, 33-29, on Taylor's offensive putback, the Pirates rattled off a 9-0 run over the next two minutes of action to grab a 38-33 lead.
