WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University men's basketball team fell to visiting Seton Hall, 87-72, on Sunday afternoon, in the Multipurpose Activity Center. Monmouth, now 1-1, was paced by four players in double-figures, while the Pirates (2-0) connected on nine three-pointers en route to the win.
Monmouth jumped out to a 7-4 lead at the 15:10 mark on
Ed Waite's putback, but three straight treys from Jamel Jackson pushed the Pirates in front 16-11 with 11:15 showing. The Hawks trimmed the lead to 16-15 on a
Mike Myers Keitt offensive rebound and hoop, and knotted the score at 16-16, on a
Will Campbell free throw with 10:00 remaining.
After
Dutch Gaitley's tip-in gave the Hawks the lead, 20-18, with 8:25 left,
Travis Taylor's drive put Monmouth ahead 25-21 with 6:16 showing.
After a Seton Hall timeout, the Pirates rattled off 21-4 run, which included a trio of threes, to end the opening half, and take a 42-29 lead at the break.
The Pirates inflated the edge to 17 points, 48-31, with 17:36 remaining, but the Hawks pulled within 52-42 after back-to-back Waite treys, with 13:18 left.
Monmouth pulled within 59-48 with just over 10 minutes remaining, but SHU held a Hawks rally back, upping the lead back to 17 with 3:15 left on a pair of free throws.
Monmouth, which shot just 18-of-32 from the free throw line, was paced by Taylor's 19 points and eight rebounds, while Campbell chipped in 14 points. Waite, in just his second career game, added another double-digit effort, tallying 13 points, while Myers Keitt added 11 points and five boards.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday morning, when Monmouth participates in ESPN's Tip-Off Marathon with a non-conference contest at Saint Peter's at 6:00 a.m.
