HAMDEN, Conn. - The Monmouth University field hockey team forced overtime at Quinnipiac with less than a minute left in regulation before ultimately falling to the Bobcats 2-1 in extra time on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks fall to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in league play while QU improves to 4-9 and also 3-2 in the conference.
Monmouth freshman Michelle Pieczynski (Doylestown, Pa. /Central Bucks West) tied the contest at 1-1 with 48 seconds left in regulation, scoring off of a corner, for her sixth tally of the season. The Bobcats came through with the game-winner 4:47 into overtime when Kaitlyn Notarianni scored on a rebound in front of the cage.
Quinnipiac took the contest's initial lead not even two minutes into the game when Lauren Hartnett scored off of a corner. The Hawks then held the host's scoreless until extra time, ultimately falling on the road.
The Bobcats outshot Monmouth 15-6, including 3-0 in overtime, but the Hawks held a 7-6 advantage on penalty corners. MU keeper Melissa Katz (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) made seven saves in the contest, while her counterpart, QU's Jenna Grossman, stopped three shots.
Quinnipiac now leads the all-time series with MU 15-4, 9-1 at home. Monmouth returns to action next Sunday when they host Lock Haven at 1:00 pm.
