MOON TOWNSHIP, PA. ? The Monmouth University freshman trio of Travis Taylor, Will Campbell and Mike Myers Keitt, each scored in double-figures to pace the Hawks in a 75-62 loss at league-leading Robert Morris in the Sewall Center on Saturday night.
Taylor notched a team-high 19 points, while Campbell connected on three three-pointers in his 14-point night, and Myers Keitt chipped in 10 points of his own, as the Hawks fall to 6-17 overall and 4-7 in the Northeast Conference.
Robert Morris, which opened by hitting its first four three-pointers, including three from Bateko Francisco, took a 12-1 lead with 17:07 remaining. Mike Myers Keitt's pull-up jumper in the lane, 13 seconds later, made the score 12-3.
The Colonials opened a 15-3 cushion when Jeremy Chappell hit a baseline jump shot off an inbounds play, but consecutive R.J. Rutledge baskets, including a three-pointer, which were both assisted by James Hett, pulled Monmouth within 15-8 at 14:05.
RMU matched its 12-point lead at 9:52, on a Rob Robinson basket, but Will Campbell's wing three-pointer late in the shot clock, made the score 24-15, with 8:08 left in the half. After the Colonials took a 28-15 lead, back-to-back Travis Taylor baskets made the score 28-19 with 6:20 showing.
The Hawks continued a spurt, behind Myers Keitt's four-point play and a Taylor post move, to pull within 32-25 with 3:34 remaining. A Taylor offensive rebound and put back, coupled with Campbell's second trifecta, made the score 39-32 with 1:12 left until the break, but Mezie Nwigwe's basket with 56 ticks left gave the Colonials a 41-32 edge at the half.
Monmouth, which trimmed the RMU lead to seven out of the locker room on a pair of Campbell free throws, trailed 48-40 with 12:56 remaining, when Taylor laid in a feed from Kevin Schafer.
The Colonials, who scored the next eight points over a 1:53-span, grabbed a 56-40 lead, and pushed the advantage to 60-42 with 9:03 remaining.
A Taylor post move and another Campbell three-pointer from the wing, pulled the Hawks within 62-49 at 7:15, and the Hawks capped an 11-2 run at the 6:40 mark, when Nunner drilled a wing trey in transition, and connected on the free throw, for Monmouth's second four-point play of the contest, pulling the Hawks within 62-53.
RMU answered with a 10-2 run to corral a 72-55 advantage at the 4:10 mark.
Taylor, who went 9-of-16 from the field, notched his 17th double-figure scoring game on the season, and added six rebounds and four assists, while Campbell went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc for his third straight contest in double-digits.
Robert Morris, winners of nine straight, leads the NEC with its 9-1 mark and is now 15-7 overall. The Colonials were paced by Chappel's game-high 25 points.
Monmouth returns to action on Thursday, February 5th, when the Hawks host future NEC member Bryant University. Tip-off, in Boylan Gym, where the Hawks are 5-4 on the year, is set for 7 p.m.
