MONMOUTH STRUGGLES IN SECOND HALF IN 65-51 LOSS AT SAINT FRANCIS

LORETTO, PA. ? Monmouth, which is now 0-11 on the road, fell at Saint Francis University, 65-51, in Northeast Conference action, on Thursday night. The Hawks, who went nearly five and half minutes without scoring in the second half, fell behind by as many as 17 points to fall to 6-16 overall and 4-6 in league play. With the victory, the Red Flash improve to 5-15 overall and 2-8 in the NEC.

Monmouth freshman guard Will Campbell, who scored a game-high and season-best 21 points, paced the Hawks in the loss, behind a career-high four three-pointers. The guard scored 16 of Monmouth's 26 second-half points, despite the Hawks' 27.6% shooting from the field in the second stanza.

Monmouth's junior guard Yaniv Simpson gave the Hawks a 5-3 early edge with his wing three-pointer, but a 9-2 SFU spurt, capped by Marquis Ford's trey, put the Red Flash in front 12-7, with 13:15 left.

Travis Taylor, who notched eight straight points for the Hawks, gave Monmouth a 13-12 edge at 11:53 when he converted a three-point play, and Alex Nunner's two free throws, on a one-and one, with 7:28 showing, tied the game at 17-17.

SFU's Cale Nelson answered four straight Monmouth free throws with a wing trifecta, before Campbell's trey on a secondary break knotted the score at 22-22 with 5:07 showing.

After Monmouth tied the score, SFU responded with a 7-1 run, capped by Steve Profeta's corner three-pointer, to take a 29-23 advantage with 12 ticks remaining. Nunner's jump shot with 2.4 seconds left before the break, pulled the Hawks within 29-25 at the intermission.

Coupled with two Monmouth empty possessions to open the second half, Saint Francis, behind a Ford three-pointer and Devin Sweetney's fast break layup, opened a 34-25 lead at the 18:52 mark.

A Simpson trifecta made the score 34-28, 20 seconds later, and his third three-pointer of the contest pulled the Hawks within five points, 38-33, with 16:28 showing.

The Red Flash, who scored the next 12 points, took a 17-point advantage, 50-33, with 11:17 left.

Campbell's three-pointer from the wing ended Monmouth's 5:27 scoring drought, and made the tally 50-36, with 11:01 remaining in the contest. Campbell hit his third trey with 8:46 left, making the score 52-39.

Monmouth fell behind by 17 points, 63-46, with 2:10 remaining before another Campbell trifecta made the score 63-49 with 1:58 showing.

Taylor notched his team-leading 16th game in double-figures in his first career start, adding 11 points and eight rebounds. Monmouth, which surrendered 54.2% to SFU in the second half, hit just 29.6% (16-for-54) from the field for the game.

Ford led the way for Saint Francis, tallying 19 points, as the guard connected on 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Sweetney added his fourth double-double of the season, with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Cale Nelson dished out a game-best nine assists.

Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, January 31st, when the Hawks travel to Robert Morris for an NEC contest in the Sewall Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
