WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth field hockey team (0-3) fought hard in a rain-soaked matchup, losing 4-2 to the Colgate Raiders (2-1) on Saturday evening at So Sweet A Cat Field. Junior defender Sarah Keppel (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) lead the way again for the Hawks, knocking in her second goal of the season.
Despite the horrendous conditions, the Hawks played hard from the opening whistle lead by senior forward Enza Mazza (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) with three shots on goal in the first ten minutes of play.
Despite Mazza's efforts, Colgate opened up scoring 14 minutes into the game with a Colgate corner goal by Lauren Carey that was assisted by Laura Flisnik and Maddie Watrobski. Hawks' Keppel answered with her own goal one minute later, knotting up the game. Colgate added an additional goal by Mika Ella-Tang before halftime.
The second half looked much like the first half with Colgate striking twice, with two unassisted goals, making the game 1-4. Showing relentless attitude despite the score, senior forward Aileen Bosmans (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) tapped in a gritty rebound for her second career goal with five minutes left to play.
The Hawks held the shooting advantage 13-8 with a career-high 10 shots on goal by Mazza. The Blue and White also held the corner advantage 7-5 with four solid opportunities in the second half.
The Hawks look to bounce back on the second game in as many days Sunday, September 7th, for a 1:30 p.m. battle with the West Chester Golden Rams at home.
