NEWARK, N.J. ? Monmouth, which allowed over 100 points for the first time in over a decade, fell 101-78 to Seton Hall (6-1) at Prudential Center, on Tuesday night.
After a
Dutch Gaitley jumper at the elbow made the score 3-2, the Pirates notched the next six points, capped by a John Garcia dunk, to take a 9-2 lead with 17:35 showing. Seton Hall extended its lead to 12-4 after a Paul Gause three-pointer, before a trey from
Alex Nunner cut the advantage to 12-7 at 16:20.
The Hall answered with a 15-1 spurt over the next 2:48 to take a 27-8 lead, capped by a Mitchell three. Seton Hall collected a 30-10 lead at 12:28, when Jeremy Hazell drilled a trey in front of the Monmouth bench.
The Pirates inflated the cushion to 23 points, 43-20, with 6:31 remaining on Hazell's dunk, but the Hawks recorded the next seven points in the game.
Mike Myers Keitt's three-pointer ignited the spurt, which was coupled with
George Barbour's drive and a
Will Campbell turn-around jumper along the baseline, to make the score 43-27, with 4:40 showing.
Barbour's traditional three-point play pulled Monmouth within 46-30, with 3:46 remaining, but the Pirates ended the stanza on a 13-5 run to hold a 59-35 lead at the intermission.
Hazell, who registered eight straight points for Seton Hall, gave the Pirates a 73-39 lead with 15:54 left, and SHU extended its lead to a game-high 40 points, 89-49, with 9:44 showing.
Back-to-back trifectas from
Will Campbell and Myers Keitt, with 5:15 left made the score 95-62.
Monmouth, which had not surrendered 100+ points to an opponent since February 26, 1998, allowed the Pirates a season-high point total as well.
The Hawks were paced by Taylor's 18 points (7-for-10 FG) and nine rebounds, while three other Hawks notched double-figures for the first time this season. Myers Keitt chipped in a season-best 16 points and eight assists, while Campbell and Barbour each added 10 points.
Hazell, who hit six three-pointers, led all scorers with 32 points, while Mitchell (23 points) and Garcia (12) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Seton Hall.
Monmouth, now 1-7 overall, returns to action on Saturday, December 6, when the Hawks open Northeast Conference play with a contest at Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
