EMMITSBURG, Md. ? The Monmouth University men's soccer team defeated Mount St. Mary's 2-1 on Saturday afternoon on sophomore Ryan Kinne's (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) second game-winning goal in the last three matches for the Hawks. Monmouth improves to 8-2-2 and 2-0-1 in the NEC with the win, while Mount is now 6-6-0 and 2-1-0 in conference.
“This was a typical, hard fought NEC battle between two good teams,” said head coach Robert McCourt. “Mount is a good team and this is a big win for us on the road. Kinne continues to have special moments for us at important times.”
After Mount St. Mary's tied the contest at 1-1 on Eric Detzel's fifth goal of the season in the 25th minute, Rob LaRocca (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) played a ball through to Kinne who beat the keeper for his team-high eighth goal of the season. Kinne continues his stellar play, particularly in league contests, as he scored the game-winner in MU's 2-1 overtime win over Saint Francis (Pa.) last Friday and netted the equalizer in the Hawks 2-2 draw with Robert Morris last Sunday.
Monmouth scored their first goal when freshman George Quintano (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) fired the ball towards the net and Mount keeper Chris Davis got a hand on it but wasn't able to stop for his second goal of the year, not even four minutes into the match.
The Hawks, who controlled the majority of the first half's possession and rhythm, outshot Mount 10-7. The hosts held a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks in the match. Monmouth's Bryan Meredith (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) made three saves to record his eighth win of the season, while Mount's Chris Davis made four saves in the loss.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday when they travel to Brooklyn Heights for a 7:00 p.m. match with St. Francis (N.Y.)
