CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Monmouth University dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 3-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon, in its final game of the 2007 Carolina Nike Classic. The Hawks, who defeated No. 16 North Carolina on Friday night, allowed two late first half scores to Cody Arnoux in the defeat.
Arnoux netted his first score at 40:20 off a feed from Zack Schilawski, from 20 yards out. The forward scored his second goal of the game and season, off a header, at 42:13 off a corner kick feed from Sam Cronin.
"It was a gutsy performance by our guys," said head coach Robert McCourt. "We just lacked the depth to pull off two wins this weekend, against two highly-ranked teams."
Wake Forest, which advanced to the NCAA semifinals in 2006, outshot the Hawks 11-5 in the match, forcing Daniel Schenkel to make four saves. Senior Tom Gray unleashed three shots on goal for the Hawks.
The Blue and White finished second at the 2007 Carolina Nike Classic with its 1-1 mark. Wake Forest finished unscathed at 2-0, while both North Carolina and Old Dominion finished 0-1-1, after their tie on Sunday night.
Schenkel, Michael Millar and Damon Wilson each were named to the 2007 Carolina Nike Classic All-Tournament Team, joining Wake's Corben Bone, Cody Arnoux, Pat Phelan and Evan Brown. ODU's Trevor Banks and David Horst, and UNC's Andre Sherard and Cameron Brown were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Monmouth is now 1-1-1 versus ranked Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) teams since 2005. During the 2005 campaign, the Hawks tied No. 6 Virginia 2-2 in Charlottesville. Monmouth topped No. 16 North Carolina on Friday night, 1-0.
Monmouth returns to action on September 7, when the Hawks host Manhattan on The Great Lawn.
