PRINCETON, N.J.- Monmouth University's men's track team wrapped up a successful day at the Sam Howell Invitational on Saturday, which was hosted by Princeton University.
“I am very pleased with the outcome today especially with the team battling the weather conditions,” said head coach Joe Compagni. “We had some really great performances today by our upper classman and our younger athletes.”
Marion Easley (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) took first in the javelin for the second consecutive meet, throwing 209'2”. Bryan Fill (Hasbrook Heights, N.J./Hasbrook Heights) was fifth (181'5”), Matt Mizerek (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) sixth (179'1) and Tim Raywood (Trenton, N.J./Nottingham) finished eighth with his throw of 175'2.
Monmouth's 4x400 relay team took first in the event, which was comprised of Darrin Chandler (Hackensack, N.J./Paramus Catholic), David Gaines (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck), Joe Quintano (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and Derrik Keich (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area). Chandler was also third in the 400m with a time of 50.55. Jerome St. Bernard (Markham, Ontario) was sixth in the 100m, crossing the finish line in 11.31.
Nick Williams (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) was third in the shot put with at toss of 52'0 ?”, while Larry Lundy (Friendsville, Pa./Montros) was seventh in the same event with a toss of 48' 8 ?”. Ed Skowronski (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) was sixth in the hammer with a toss of 187'3”, with Ryan Connell (Nutley, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) taking seventh, throwing 185'4”. Lundy was eighth in that event with a throw of 179'1”. Connell's toss qualifies him for the NCAA Division I Regional Championships, joining teammate Skowronski who acheived the feat earlier in the season. Easley aslo qualified for the meet in the javelin.
Keich took fifth in the 400m hurdles (57.47), with St. Bernard's time of 22.80 in the 200m placing third. Michale Buccheri (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) and Matt Losey (Penn Yan, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) were seven-eight in the high jump, clearing 6' 2 ?” and 6' 0 ?”, respectively.
On the first day of competition, Williams finished third in the discus with a throw of 155'8”, while Lundy was fifth in the event with a toss of 152'4”. Craig Segal (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) ran 14.56 in the 5000m.
The team will split up again next week, with some members competing at the University of Virginia Invite while others going to the Bucknell Distance Carnival.
