WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's lacrosse team never trailed as they defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 20-1 in Northeast Conference action Thursday afternoon at Kessler Field. MU improves to 10-3 and 4-0 in the NEC while the Red Flash fall to 0-6 and 0-3 in league play.
Monmouth was led by senior Katie Degen (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) who scored three goals and dished out three assists on the afternoon. Junior Ashley Waldman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) also added three goals for MU, while four players, Brittany McLaughlin (Coram, N.Y./Longwood), Megan Brennan (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop Carrol), Kristie Sosnowski (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and Brittany Scott (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township), added two goals apiece.
McLaughlin added three assists as well, while Brennan, Colleen Burg (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and Shawn Evans (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) added two helpers apiece.
The Hawks scored the first four goals of the game as Brennan and Waldman before Ali Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y./Shaker) took a Degen feed and deposited in into the net to give MU a 3-0 lead. St. Francis (Pa.) got their goal as Shannon Scarola scored at the 23:29 mark, but then it was all Monmouth the rest of the way. Kaitlyn Robinson (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored to put MU up 9-1, before both of McLaughlin's goals and a Scott score gave MU a 13-1 lead heading into halftime.
Evans scored to put MU up 17-1 at the 15:54 mark, before Megan Nutter (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), Amy Hanson (Lexington Park, Md./Leonardtown) and Jessica Picciuto (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) closed out the Blue and White scoring.
Jackie Trainer (Upper Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) logged six ground balls, while Picciuto and Sosnowski added five each. Perry DeWitt (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), Kelly Bosco (Gulph Mills, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and Robinson contriubted three each, while Burg, Brennan, Degen and McLaughlin added two apiece.
Monica Johnson (Radnor, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) got the win in goal for the Hawks, while Becca Ozl (Manassas,Va./Osborn Park) played the second half between the pipes.
MU outshot the Red Flash 34-3 in the game, and also had 33 ground balls as a team.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, April 7 as they host Robert Morris at 12 pm at Kessler Field.
