MEN'S TRACK TAKES FIRST AT UVA INVITE

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-  Paced by David Gaines'(Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck) IC4A qualifying time and the throwing unit, Monmouth University's men's track and field team took first at the Lou Onesty/Milton Abramson Invitational hosted on the campus of the University of Virginia on Friday and Saturday.

The Hawks took first with a score of 123, with Rhode Island coming in second with 110 team points.  Host University of Virginia took third with 82 points, while UMES was fourth.  2007 marks the eighth straight year that the Hawks have placed third or better at the meet.

“The conditions (cold and rainy all day) certainly affected the performances in many events. Our team and some others may have been missing a few people in some events," said head coach Joe Compagni.  "We are very pleased to come out on top at this meet after being close the last few years.”

Gaines' second place time of 1:51.76 in the 800m qualified him for the IC4A Championships in May.  Gaines was also part of MU's fourth place 4x400 relay team that finishing in 3.23.11.  He was joined by Darrin Chandler (Hackensack, N.J./Paramus Catholick), Joe Quintano (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and Derrik Keich (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) in the team effort.

The Blue & White 4x100 relay team of Jerome St. Bernard (Markham, Ontario/Michael McGivney), Dave Martell (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional), Alex Bowers (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) and Fabrice St. Elme (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) finished in third place with a time of 43.35.

St. Elme finished eighth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.14.   Chandler also finished in eighth place but in the 400m dash, crossing the finish in 50.14.  Quintano's time of 58.05 in the 400m hurdles was also eighth while St. Elme was fifth in the high jump, clearing 6'2 ?”.

The Hawks went two-four-five in the shot put with Nick Williams (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) taking second place with a throw of 52' 6 ?”.  Senior Kyle Hirschklau (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) was fourth with a heave of 49'9 ?”, while Keller placed fifth with a distance of 49' 9 ?”.

The Hawk throwers took five of the top seven spots in the javelin, with sophomore Marion Easley (Somersville, N.J./Somersville) taking second with his toss of 191'10”.  Tim Raywood (Trenton, N.J./Hamilton North) took third (191'00), Bryan Fill (Hasbrook Heights, N.J./Hasbrook Heights) was fourth (182'3), Williams finished fifth with a throw of 174'03” and Matt Mizerek (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) was seventh with a toss of 171'04”.

Williams took first in the discus with a throw of 165'00”, while Christian Keller (Matawan, N.J./Matawan was fifth with a throw of 148'4”.  Larry Lundy (Friendsville, Pa./Montrose Area) was sixth (148'3”) and Ed Skowronski (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) was eighth with his toss of 141'1”.

In the first day of the competition Monmouth sophomore Larry Lundy (Friendsville, Pa./Montrose Area) took first in the hammer throw on Friday night at the Onesty/Abramson Invitational hosted on the campus of the University of Virginia, qualifying him for the NCAA Division I Regional Championship.

Lundy took first in the hammer with a throw of 184'10”, while junior Skowronski was second with a toss of 184'7”.  Senior Ryan Connell (Nutley, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) finished fourth with his heave of 176'10” and Keller rounded out the MU placers with a toss of 171'01 for sixth.  Lundy makes the third MU thrower to qualify for the hammer in the regionals, marking the first time that the Blue & White's track & field team has had three athletes compete in the same event at the competition.
