LORETTO, PA. - Monmouth sophomore Daniel Bostock netted the game-winner in overtime to lead the Hawks' men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory at Saint Francis on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks claimed their third straight Northeast Conference regular season championship, and are now 12-4-2 overall and 7-2 in the NEC. Saint Francis, which lead 2-1 at the half, claims the number-two seed in the upcoming postseason.
"I am extremely proud of the determination the guys showed today, against a very difficult Saint Francis team," said head coach Robert McCourt. "It is amazing how we've battled through injury and adversity throughout the season to get to this point. It's a tribute to the guys on the field to win a third straight regular season title."
Monmouth got on the board first, as freshman Ryan Kinne connected on a goal from 11 yards out, off a pass from senior Michael Millar, at 10:37.
SFU answered at 12:56 when Jarron Brooks registered a goal off the crossbar. The Red Flash went ahead 2-1 in the 19th minute when Daniel Moir tapped in a loose ball in front of the Hawks' net.
The Hawks needed a late goal to knot the score at 2-2 and send it to an extra session, as Andreas Klang netted his third goal of the year at 85:01.
Bostock scored his first career goal 5:53 into the first overtime, off an assist from Dan Haydu for the game-winner.
Monmouth held a 16-8 advantage in shots, forcing SFU's Brad WIlliams to make five saves. Daniel Schenkel made two saves for the Hawks.
Monmouth, which won its third straight Northeast Conference Championship, hosts the NEC postseason on November 16 and 18, on The Great Lawn. Monmouth will play number-four seed Central Connecticut State (6-8-3, 4-3-2 NEC) on Friday, November 16 in the semifinal, while Saint Francis (8-8-2, 6-2-1 NEC) will battle with Sacred Heart (10-7-1, 6-3 NEC) in the second semifinal.
