HAWKS FALL LATE AT SAINT PETER'S 72-62 IN JERSEY CITY

JERSEY CITY, N.J. ? The Monmouth University men's basketball team dropped a 72-62 decision at Saint Peter's in non-conference action on Wednesday night. Monmouth (2-4) snapped a two-game win streak for the Hawks, while Saint Peter's (3-2) won its third straight.

 

George Barbour's follow gave Monmouth a 2-0 lead to open the game, before the Peacocks scored the next five points to grab a 5-2 edge at 17:36. Whitney Coleman's corner three-pointer knotted the score 20 seconds later, before SPC pushed the score to 11-7 on Darrell Lampley's three-pointer from the corner.

 

R.J. Rutledge answered with a corner trey of his own to pull the Hawks within 11-10 at 15:41 and Coleman's pull-up maintained a one-point deficit at the 12:14 mark, as Monmouth trailed 13-12.

 

SPC grabbed a 19-14 advantage when Raul Orta dropped in a floater in the lane, but Nick DelTufo answered with a top of the key three-pointer, to make the score 19-17 with 9:49 showing on the clock.

 

Monmouth knotted the score at 19-19 on Jhamar Youngblood's drive and scoop, but the Peacocks scored the next four to grab a 23-19 edge at 8:22. Youngblood, who scored seven straight points for the Hawks, gave Monmouth its first lead since 2-0, when he drained a corner three-pointer at 7:55 to put MU ahead 24-23. The Peacocks answered with a 5-0 spurt from Orta, giving Saint Peter's a 28-24 lead.

 

James Hett dropped in an elbow three at 6:51 to pull Monmouth within 28-27, before Todd Sowell dropped in a basket and free throw to give the Peacocks a four-point edge at 4:27.

 

Rutledge, whose two free throws at 3:12 stopped a 3:38 scoreless draught for the Hawks, made four straight foul shots to pull the Hawks even once again with 2:24 left until the break. Sowell answered with his fifth straight point to give SPC a 33-31 edge with 1:42 left and the Peacocks held a 36-32 lead at the break, scoring their final six points from the foul line, over a 4:27 span.

 

Barbour notched the first points of the second half, dropping in two free throws to pull MU within 36-34, but the Peacocks pushed the lead to 42-34 at 15:22 on back-to-back Sowell offensive rebounds and put-backs.

 

SPC pushed the lead to 45-36 at 14:32, when Orta drained his second three of the game, and maintained a nine-point edge with 13:48, before consecutive Youngblood baskets, including a break-away dunk, made the score 47-42 with 12:00 minutes left.

 

Nick Leon stepped back for a trifecta at the 11:33 mark to put the Peacocks up 50-42 but Youngblood's three-point play pulled Monmouth within 51-45 with 10:42 showing. Alex Nunner notched the next five points, including a corner three-pointer with 9:05 left, to make the score 52-50.

 

SPC, which scored eight straight points from the foul line over a three minute span, pushed the lead to 64-56 when Leon's scoop shot in the lane dropped. DelTufo pulled Monmouth within 64-60 with his two free throws at 3:11, but Sowell's layin made the score 66-60 with 2:44 on the clock.

 

Youngblood dropped in two free throws at the 2:10 mark to make it a four-point contest, but the Peacocks, who hit only three field goals in the final nine minutes, knocked down six foul shots in the final minute to hold on for the 72-62 win.

 

Youngblood led all scorers with 25 points, while Rutledge and DelTufo each added nine points for Monmouth, which had three players foul out in the game.

Monmouth, which has opened the season with six road games, allowed 17 second-chance points to the Peacocks, who outrebounded the Hawks 43-30 in the contest.


Sowell led three SPC scorers in double-digits with a double-double of 23 points and 18 rebounds. Leon connected for 18 points, while Orta added 12 for the Peacocks, who attempted 35 foul shots.

 

Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, when the Hawks open NEC play against Sacred Heart in Boylan Gym at 2 p.m. The Hawks will host its second Autism Awareness Day at the game.
