TEANECK, N.J.- Monmouth scored a goal in the 96th minute to edge the Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team, 2-1, in overtime on a wet and rainy Friday afternoon in Teaneck, NJ. The Knights fall to 3-8-2 overall with a 1-3-1 mark in Northeast Conference action, while the Hawks improve to 9-2-2 with a 4-0-0 record in league play.
Six minutes into the game, Monmouth's Ryan Kinne tipped in the ball off a defender's block after receiving the pass from Tom Gray. The goal was Kinne's third of the season and the assist was Gray's fifth.
The Knights broke the 1-0 Monmouth advantage when Rodrigo Calazans Costa was hit inside the box in the 47th minute. Samson Malijani fired the penalty kick past diving goalkeeper Daniel Schenkel into the bottom right corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season.
FDU had a chance to take the lead with seven minutes remaining in regulation as Maliljani attempted to knock in a corner kick from Jonathan Yazo. Schenkel punched out the shot and Calazans Costa tried to bury the rebound, but Schenkel jumped on it to end the attack.
With the score tied 1-1 in overtime, Daniel Bostock sent a long feed down to Damon Wilson, who went one-on-one with goalkeeper Elvir Prasovic and netted the game-winner from 10 yards out.
Monmouth heads up to Sacred Heart to face the Pioneers on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2:30 p.m.
