WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University men's soccer team, paced by senior
Steven Holloway's (Hamilton, New Zealand/Hamilton) [pictured] two goals and sophomore
Andreas Klang's (Gothemberg, Sweden) 30-yard blast, topped Rider University, 4-0, in collegiate soccer action on Tuesday afternoon on The Great Lawn. The Hawks (1-1-0) earned their first win of the season, while handing Rider (1-1-1) its first loss.
Monmouth opened the scoring in the fourth minute, as sophomore
Tom Gray (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) was pulled down in the box for a penalty kick, which Holloway converted into the right netting.
The Hawks went up 2-0 in the 20th minute, when Klang received a pass out wide from senior midfielder
Jonathan Schmid (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and rifled a shot from 30 yards away, which struck off the far post and in for the defender's first goal in the Blue and White.
Monmouth junior netminder
Daniel Schenkel (Campo Verde, Brazil) preserved the Hawks' two-goal advantage late in the half as Rider's Lee Tomasso quickly struck a direct kick that forced Schenkel to make a diving save.
The Blue and White extended the lead to 3-0 in the 76th minute, Holloway notched his second goal of the match, racing on goal after a Gray feed and beating Rider's Daniel Riverso to the near post.
Less than a minute later, senior
Chris Ell (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) knocked in a rebound shot of Gray's for his first score of the year, and the second of his career, for the 4-0 win.
"We are happy with the result," said head coach
Rob McCourt, who is now 3-0 versus Rider in his third season with the Hawks. "We were pleased with the goal scoring opportunities we created, but with a lot of new faces out there we still feel there is a lot of work ahead of us."
Monmouth out shot the Broncs 23-7 in the match, including a 13-2 advantage in the second stanza.
Schenkel made four saves in goal for the Hawks for his first shutout of the season. Riverso stopped four shots, while allowing four scores, while Randall Zapolski minded the Rider net for the final 8:27, making three saves.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, September 1 when it hosts Manhattan in the second annual Soccer Post Classic on The Great Lawn at 1 p.m. Seton Hall and Adelphi compete at 3 p.m. in the second half of the Classic doubleheader.
