Whitney Coleman drained a wing jumper off a feed from senior
Dejan Delic with 5.3 seconds left, to lift Monmouth to a 67-66 comeback win at Rider on Thursday night, in Alumni Gymnasium. Rider, which led by five points with 1:47 remaining, falls to 4-2. Monmouth improves to 3-5.
Rider's Jason Thompson connected on two free throws at the 1:47 mark after a Monmouth turnover, before Delic connected on two straight baskets. Trailing 66-63 with 25.8 ticks left after Ryan Thompson hit two foul shots,
Mike Shipman hit a quick two-point hoop, before Monmouth forced a Rider turnover. As the Broncs' defense collapsed on Delic, who made it into the lane, the senior found Coleman wide open for a wing jumper. Terrance Mouton's attempt at the buzzer fell short.
In a tightly contested first half, the Hawks held the largest lead of five points, 17-12, with 7:25 remaining when
Corey Hallett knocked down a jump shot from the right wing.
Rider's Jason Thompson, who recorded 15 first half points, cut the Monmouth lead to 17-15 behind his three-point play with 7:00 showing, before back-to-back baskets by
Jhamar Youngblood put the Blue and White ahead 21-17 with just under five minutes remaining.
Harris Mansell netted five straight points for the Broncs over a 35 second span to help Rider reclaim a lead at the 3:51 mark, 22-21, which was short-lived, as the Hawks outscored the Broncs 9-4 to end the half.
John Bunch's mini-hook in the lane started the run and Delic capitalized on an offensive rebound with a free throw to give MU a 30-26 at the break.
Rider knotted the score out of the locker room at 31-31, with 18:33 left, but back-to-back Delic three's out the Hawks back on top 39-33, 2:30 later.
After MU led 51-46, Rider scored the next eight points out of the media timeout under eight minutes, to snare a three-point edge, 54-51, with 6:22 showing.
Monmouth had three players in double-figures, led by Delic's 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Bunch added 12 points and six rebounds, while Youngblood chipped in 11 points and seven boards.
Jason Thompson led all scorers with 29 points and 13 rebounds, while Ryan Thompson added 13 points and Harris Mansell chipped in with 10.
Monmouth outshot Rider from the field, connecting on 47.2% (25-of-53). The Hawks, which held a 32-26 edge in points in the paint, forced 15 Rider turnovers and capitalized for 18 points. The MU bench also outscored the Broncs' pine, 25-2.
Monmouth returns to action on Monday, December 4, when the Hawks take on Seton Hall University at Continental Airlines Arena at 7:30 p.m.
