MONMOUTH OUTLASTS ARKANSAS STATE IN OVERTIME, 69-67 FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON

NORFOLK, VA. - Dejan Delic (Belgrade, Serbia-Montenegro) hit a lefty scoop shot with 15 seconds left to propel the Monmouth University men's basketball team to a 69-67 overtime win over the Arkansas State Indians in the Hawks' finale at the Cox Communications Classic in Norfolk, Va.

Sophomore Mike Shipman (Bronx, N.Y./Middletown (Del.) hit two free throws with 1.6 seconds showing on the clock in regulation to send the game into overtime.

The win is Monmouth's first on the young season and they leave Norfolk with a 1-2 record. Arkansas State leaves the tournament without a win at 0-3.

"This was a big win for us," said head coach Dave Calloway. "Marques is Mr. Clutch for us, and tonight we had a host of players step up like Delic and Shipman."

Marques Alston (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) tied the game twice in overtime, first with a three to knot the contest at 65-65 and then a reverse lay-up to equal the score at 67-67 before Delic's heroics.

Alston and Whitney Coleman (Salem, Conn./East Lyme) each led four Hawks in double figures with 16 points apiece. Shipman added 12 and Delic 10 in the game for the Blue and White.

The Hawks took an early 7-6 lead at the 15:58 of the first half mark behind a Marques Alston pull-up three.

The action picked up considerably as Monmouth withstood a barrage of Adrian Banks three-point field goals as the junior from Arkansas State started off 4-5 from distance, but Monmouth led 16-15 at the 11:04 mark behind seven Delic points, including a three to give the Hawks a one point lead near the halfway mark of the first half.

The Indians took a 19-16 lead at the 7:38 mark behind a Banks breakaway dunk as both teams traded baskets. The Hawks interior defense was stout early as Corey Hallett (Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada/Shelburne) and John Bunch (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) combined for six blocks in the first half, with Bunch booking four swats.

Monmouth trimmed the Arkansas State lead to one at 21-20 at the 3:37 mark after Bunch hit a baseline turnaround jump-hook.

Arkansas State took their biggest lead of the game at the time at 26-22 right before halftime, but Shipman hit a pair of free throws to bring the Hawks within two at 26-24 at intermission.

Arkansas State maintained a two-point lead at 38-36 at the 15:38 mark as the action was furious early in the second half as both teams came out red hot with Banks and Ryan Wedel knocking down three-pointers for the Indians and Coleman and Hallett booking a trey each for the Hawks.

The Indians maintained their slim lead 44-41 over the Hawks midway through the second half as Banks hit two more three's in a three-minute stretch.

The Hawks regained the lead at 46-44 mere seconds later after an Alston slashing left-handed lay-up and Coleman corner three.

Monmouth's match-up zone defense began to stifle the Indians and Coleman took over with 13 second half points when the Blue and White held a 53-48 lead at the 6:31 mark of the game.

The game's pace slowed significantly as Monmouth took a 54-50 lead at the 3:49 mark of the second half. The Indians retook the lead at 57-56 with 1:52 to play after an Issac Wells jumper.

Arkansas State pushed their lead to 59-56 after Banks hit a tough runner on the baseline with the shot clock winding down at the one minute mark. Shipman answered with a reverse lay-up to trim the lead to a single point 59-58 with :25.4 seconds left in regulation before he, Alston and Delic took over.

Hallett added five points, seven rebounds and two blocks, Bunch scored eight points and blocked five shots.

The Hawks return to action when they travel to Texas for a two game swing through the Lone Star State, beginning November 18 with a match-up with the Houston Cougars; tip-off is set for 2 p.m. Central time. Monmouth then takes on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on November 20 at 7 p.m. Central Time.
