BOX SCOREWEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University field hockey team scored four first half goals, the first and fourth by senior
Hollee Hooven (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central), en route to a 5-1 victory over Siena Friday afternoon at the Monmouth Field Hockey Complex. The win is the Hawks' second straight in the Northeast Conference evening up their NEC mark at 2-2, and improving them to 4-9 overall.
"It was great to see the team come out strong and get on top quickly," said head coach
Monica Morgan Levy. "Our forwards did a great job and Molly (Passarella) played great defense on one of their strongest players."
The Hawks' jumped on top early as Hooven scored a reverse stick goal just under two minutes in the game. Less than two minutes later,
Kelly Crist (Belford, N.J./Middletown North) took a pass from
Court Stetson (Woodbury, N.J./West Deptford) and deposited it into the back of the cage to give the Hawks' a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.
Annie LoPresti (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) was fouled inside and circle and awarded a penalty stroke, which she blasted past Siena goalie Jennifer Tesak to give Monmouth a 3-0 lead.
The first half concluded with Hooven scoring again to give the Hawks' a 4-0 intermission lead.
Traci Baldwin took an Emily Winslow pass in front of the Monmouth net and scored at the 38:00 minute mark for Siena. Monmouth answered when
Janine Rini (Millstone, N.J./Allentown) scored for the Hawks' to give them the final 5-1 score.
Chelsea Farley (Sykesville, Md./Centennial) made seven saves in net before giving way to Megan Smtih (Easton, Pa./Easton Area).
For the game, the Hawks' outshot the Saints 27-17, including 15-5 in the first half.
Monmouth returns to action this Sunday, October 15 when they host Robert Morris for a 12 p.m. match. The game marks the Hawks' senior day and their three seniors,
Bridget Green (Atco, N.J./Hammonton),
Annie Welsh (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and
Maeve Hagen (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) will be honored during the pre-game announcements.
