Eighth Inning Rally Lifts Hawks Over Lafayette

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure a 6-1 win over Lafayette College on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Drew Yagodzinskie started for the Hawks and held the Leopards in check through the first five innings. Lafayette's best chance in that stretch came in the second as the Leopards loaded the bases with two outs. Yagodzinskie induced a flyout to get out of trouble.
 
The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Walsh's RBI single plated Will Fahey for the 1-0 advantage. 
 
Lafayette answered in the top of the sixth. Three straight singles with two outs allowed the Leopards to tie the game at 1-1.
 
The Leopards had a chance to break the tie in the top of the eighth as they loaded the bases with one out. Nick Tamburro was able to get a foul out and a fly ball to get out of trouble in the inning.
 
The Hawks broke the 1-1 stalemate in the bottom of the eighth. Monmouth loaded the bases with two outs on a trio of walks. Walsh drew a walk that plated Kevin Fedoruk with the go-ahead run. A single through the right side from Simmi Whitehill pushed the Monmouth lead to 4-1. The Hawks capped the scoring with a two-run single from RJ Mustaro that pushed the lead to 6-1.
 
Stefan Swee got a double play and a ground out in the ninth to secure the 6-1 win for the Hawks.
 
Notes
  • Wyatt Hunt stretched his hit streak to seven straight games with his single in the fifth. 
  • Simmi Whitehill extended his reached base safely streak to 21 straight games with his walk in the first inning.
  • Kevin Fedoruk had his first multi-hit game as a Hawk. He finished with a pair of doubles in the contest. 
  • Jimmy Bruno dropped a pair of sac bunts for the Hawks. He ranks second on the team with four sacrifices this season.
  • Whitehill walked a season-high three times in the game.
  • The Hawks had six stolen bases in the game. It was the second most steals by the Hawks in a game this season. 
  • Drew Yagodzinskie made his second start of the season and struck out a career-high six batters over six innings of work.
  • Nick Tamburro picked up his first win of the season with two innings of scoreless relief work. 
  • Three Monmouth pitchers combined for eight strikeouts in the game. It was the 10th time this season the Hawks have posted eight or more strikeouts in a game.
