WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. –
Nick Lovarco tied the game with a grand slam in the fourth but Stony Brook University scored five times in the final four innings and claimed a 10-7 win over the Monmouth University baseball team in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) action on Sunday.

Stony Brook scored two in the second and grabbed an early lead in the contest.Â

The Hawks answered in bottom of the second. With runners on first and second,
Colin Richter poked a single through the right side. That scored
Jake Howlett and made it a 2-1 game.

A home run and a double in the fourth pushed the Stony Brook lead to 5-1.

Once again, the Hawks answered in their half of the inning. The Hawks loaded the bases with two outs on a walk and a couple of hit by pitches. Lovarco sent the second pitch he saw over the wall in center field for a grand slam that tied the game at 5-5.

Stony Brook used three hits to score four times in the top of the sixth and reclaimed the lead at 9-5.Â

Richter got one back for the Hawks with a solo home run in the seventh that made it a 9-6 game.Â

Each team scored a run in the ninth as Stony Brook claimed the 10-7 win.

Notes
- Despite the loss on Sunday, the Hawks have won each of their first three CAA series of the year. It is the best start to a CAA slate since joining the conference and the best start to a conference season since the Hawks went 7-2 to start conference play in 2022.
- The Hawks tied their season-high as they were hit by a pitch five times in the game. Monmouth has now been hit by a pitch 50 times in the first 20 games of the season.Â
- Nick Lovarco's home run was his third of the season while Colin Richter's was his second of the year.
- Richter's three hit game was his first of the season.Â
- Lovarco finished with two base knocks. It was his third straight multi-hit game and fifth in the last six games.
- Jake Danyluk threw a scoreless seventh inning for the Hawks. He has not allowed a run in three appearances this season.Â
- Simmi Whitehill's double extended his reached base safely streak to 20 straight games.Â
- The Hawks' two home runs gave them 25 through the first 20 games of the season. Monmouth had 26 home runs in 54 games last season.
