Hawks Comeback for 19-9 Win Over Hofstra in Series Finale

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – A 10-run second inning proved to be the difference as the Monmouth University baseball team slugged it's way to a 19-9 win over Hofstra University in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play Sunday.

Trailing 7-1 heading to the bottom of the second, the Hawks exploded for 10 runs. Monmouth sent 13 men to the plate in the frame and recorded three hits while seven players reached via a walk or being hit by pitch. The inning was capped by a grand slam from Colin Richter that put the Hawks in front, 11-7.

Hofstra got two runs back in the top of the third and made it an 11-9 game.

The Hawks weren't done as they scored four more runs in the bottom of the third and made it a 15-9 game. RJ Mustaro and Jake Howlett each had RBI base knocks in the frame.

Caden Carlin put up back-to-back scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth and settled things down for the Hawks.

The Hawks tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth and made it a 19-9 game. Wyatt Hunt drove in two with a double and Simmi Whitehill had two RBIs on a single in the inning.

Cory Pascarella threw a scoreless top of the seventh as the Hawks secured the 19-9 win.

Notes
  • The 19 runs scored by the Hawks are the most runs scored in a game since they scored 19 against FDU last year on March 11.
  • The 7-1 deficit was the largest comeback for the Hawks since they trailed 9-1 last year against Georgetown (Mar. 15) and rallied for the 17-9 win.
  • Colin Richter's grand slam was his first career home run. He is the second Hawk to hit his first career home run this season and have it be a grand slam (Robert Kelly).
  • RJ Mustaro extended his season-long hit streak to nine straight games.
  • Simmi Whitehill pushed his reached base safely streak to 16 straight games.
  • Wyatt Hunt, Jimmy Bruno and Nick Lovarco each scored a team-high three runs in the contest.
  • Bruno scored his three runs without having an official at-bat in the game after walking twice and getting hit by a pitch.
  • Whitehill's three hits were a season-high for the senior.
  • Seven of the nine Hawks recorded at least one hit in the game. Eight of the nine Hawks scored at least one run and all nine starters drove in at least one run.
  • Caden Carlin picked up his second straight win on the mound as he went three innings and allowed just two hits.
