WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Monmouth Hawks women's basketball delivered a gritty road win Friday night, defeating William & Mary women's basketball 63–58 inside Kaplan Arena, knocking off the defending CAA champions
Monmouth controlled the tempo for much of the night, leading for over 34 minutes and using a dominant third quarter to secure its second straight win.
Friday's game featured eight lead changes and five ties.
Gigi Gamble gave Monmouth a 26-25 lead off a free throw with 2:47 to play in the second quarter and the Hawks would never relinquish their lead.
After taking a narrow 29-26 edge into halftime, the Hawks exploded out of the break with a 17-8 third frame, stretching the lead to as many as 13 early in the fourth.
The Tribe made a late push in the fourth, cutting into the deficit behind a 24-point period, but Monmouth responded with poise down the stretch.
WIlliam & Mary pulled within three points with four minutes remaining, but the Hawks stood strong, knocking down free throws and securing key defensive rebounds to seal the five-point victory.
Divine Dibula led the way with 22 points and eight rebounds.
Gigi Gamble added 20 points, eight of those points came in the fourth quarter.
Monmouth shot 44.4% from the field and scored 38 points in the paint, capitalizing on its interior presence.
