Hawks Snap Charleston’s Perfect CAA Start

WEST LONG  BRANCH, NJ.  —Monmouth women's basketball upset No. 1 Charleston, downing the Cougars 69-57 in front of 1,781 fans on Sunday afternoon at the OceanFirst Bank Center. 

The Cougars came into Sunday's game undefeated in CAA play with a 12-0 record in CAA play. The Hawks snapped Charleston's 13-game win streak. 

Monmouth improved to 16-8 overall and 9-4 in conference play, controlling the game for more than 32 minutes. 

The opening quarter featured five lead changes and three ties, as both teams traded threes and attacked the paint.

Gigi Gamble and Alexis Andrews each knocked down multiple shots from beyond the arc to keep the Hawks within striking distance. After trailing late in the period, a free throw from Kathy Kersaint tied the score at 18-18 heading into the second.

Monmouth seized control in the second quarter.

The Hawks outscored Charleston 20-9 in the frame, shooting nearly 60 percent from the field. Divine Dibula was a force inside, finishing efficiently around the rim and converting an and-one to spark a 7-0 run.

Kersaint caught fire from deep, drilling three triples in the quarter. Monmouth held a 38-27 lead at the half, propelled by the Hawks shooting 66.7% from long range in the first half. 

Charleston cut into the deficit early in the third, trimming the lead to seven, but the Hawks answered every challenge. Dibula continued to dominate in the paint, finishing through contact and cleaning up on the glass. Andrews knocked down another three midway through the period to stretch the lead back to double digits.

Monmouth maintained its composure in the fourth, shooting over 40 percent in the final quarter and holding the Cougars to 17 points.

  • Divine Dibula tallied a game-high of 19 points for her 19th game this season in double figures
  • Kathy Kersaint finished with 12 points, she recorded her second straight game in double figure
  • Alexis Andrews was the third Hawk to finish in double figures, she poured in 14 points, including a game-high four triples
  • The Hawks held a 40-26 edge on the glass, with Ella Farrelly corralling a team-high eight boards 
  • Gigi Gamble dished out a career-high seven assists
  • Monmouth totaled 19 assists on 25 made field goals
  • The Hawks shot 25-of-51 (49%) from the field and 11-of-25 (44%) from long range
  • The Cougars shot 21-of-62 (33.9%) from the field and 3-of-16 (18.8%) from distance
