Hawks Drop Pair at Carolina Classic


CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Monmouth softball suffered two losses on day two of the Carolina Classic, falling 24-0 to host UNC in game one while falling 6-1 to NKU in game two at Anderson Softball Stadium. 


GAME 1:UNC 24, Monmouth 0

The Tar Heels jumped out early, plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looking back. UNC continued to apply pressure at the plate, scoring multiple runs in every inning and securing the five-inning run-rule victory.

North Carolina Tar Heels softball finished with 24 runs on 19 hits in the contest. Monmouth Hawks softball was unable to find its rhythm offensively in game one.

GAME 2:NKU 6, Monmouth 1

NKU opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run.

Monmouth answered in the top of the third, as Gianna Stern singled to left field to plate Giana Scotti and knot the game at one.

NKU regained control in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer to take a 4-1 advantage. The Norse added to their momentum later in the inning, pushing across another run on a single to right center.

The Norse tacked on the game's final run in the bottom of the sixth inning, capitalizing on a Monmouth error.

NOTES AND NUMBERS 
  • Isabella Bonacci made her fourth start of the season, getting the nod against the Tar Heels
  • Bri Lawson and Mackenzie Bloss both had the lone hits for Monmouth against UNC
  • Olivia Lewis made her second appearance of the season against NKU, coming in for relief to Alissa Eimont
  • Eimont earned the start against NKU, recording three strikeouts
  • Giana Scotti tallied a team-high of two hits 
  • Bri Lawson has now had a hit in a team-best five straight games

Monmouth will take on UNC in the final game of the Carolina Classic on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
