Monmouth Downs NKU, Falls to Bryant on Day One of Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Monmouth softball split a pair of games on day one of the Caroline Classic Saturday at Anderson Softball Stadium, defeating NKU 7-5 in the first game while dropping a 3-2 game to Bryant in the second game.

GAME 1:Monmouth 7, NKU 5
Monmouth Hawks earned a 7-5 win over Northern Kentucky Norse on Friday afternoon.

NKU opened the scoring in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Hawks responded with five runs in the second. Monmouth first tied the game on a throwing error, then took a 2-1 lead when Dominique Lopez reached on a fielder's choice. The Hawks maintained the lead for the rest of the game.

Kylee McLain extended the advantage with a three-run home run to make it 5-1.

The Norse cut the deficit to three in the third on a sacrifice fly, but Monmouth added on again in the fourth. Lopez hit a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 7-2 lead, their largest of the game.

NKU scored three runs in the top of the seventh to pull within two and put the tying run on base, but Monmouth recorded the final outs to secure the 7-5 victory.

GAME 2:Bryant 3, Monmouth 2

Despite Kylee McLain hitting her second home run of the season  in the bottom of the sixth inning, notching a two-run home run, it would not be enough as Monmouth couldn't quite overcome the rally.

The Bulldogs scored all three runs in the top of the third inning and that would be all they needed in the win. Bryant opened up the scoring on a single down the left line, then doubled its lead on a sacrifice bunt and the Bulldogs scored the game-winning run on a stolen base.

Alissa Eimont earned the start against the Bulldogs, pitching a season-high 12 strikeouts.

NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Isabella Bonacci made her third start in the circle and back-to-back starts overall. Bonacci was credited with the win

  • Alissa Eimont tallied a season-high of 12 strikeouts against Bryant
