Monmouth Falls Short at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y.  Monmouth women's basketball fell 61–51 to Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon at Stony Brook Arena.

The Hawks were locked in a back-and-forth affair for much of the game, as neither team led by more than seven points through the first three quarters. Sunday's matchup featured 12 ties and nine lead changes.

Both teams were knotted at 13 at the end of the first quarter, with Monmouth turning in its best shooting performance of the game in the opening 10 minutes, connecting on 42.9 percent of its field-goal attempts.

Monmouth went into halftime trailing by four, 26–22, after the Seawolves used a 13–9 second-quarter run to gain separation.

The Hawks found their offensive rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring Stony Brook 18–15 to pull even heading into the final frame.

After the teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 40, Stony Brook used a 12–4 run and outscored Monmouth 20–11 in the final 10 minutes to secure the win. Caitlin Frost knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give the Seawolves a 57–51 lead, while Stony Brook held the Hawks scoreless over the final 46 seconds.

Free throws played a key role in the outcome, as Stony Brook went 16-of-25 from the charity stripe. Monmouth finished 8-of-13 at the line.
