WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Summer Reimet scored a pair of goals 88 minutes apart as the Monmouth women's soccer team blanked St. John's, 2-0, on Sunday for its fifth straight victory.
Reimet found the back of the net in the second and 90
th minutes, helping bookend an impressive defensive performance from a Hawks backline that has allowed just one goal in its last four games. Defenser
Lindsey Husic picked up a pair of helpers in the win, while netminder
Tallulah Miller made four saves, continuing her stretch of strong play.
It did not take long for the Hawks to break through, converting on its first attacking chance of the day. Husic sent in a cross from the right corner that found Reimet's right foot near the penalty dot. The CAA's preseason player of the year buried her first of the afternoon just 1:35 after the opening whistle, giving the home side a 1-0 lead.
The team's traded scoring opportunities for the rest of the half, but neither could find the back of the net. The Red Storm put its first attempt on net in the 14
th minute and recorded another shot on goal eight minutes later, but Miller made a pair of stops to keep the Johnnies scoreless. Late in the half,
Marie Bogue,
Evangeline Perdomo and
Clara Ford each produced dangerous scoring chances, prompting saves from St. John's keeper Kayla Bower.
In the first eight minutes of the second half, Bower denied Reiemt, and Miller stopped consecutive St. John's attempts. The Monmouth defense held the Johnnies without a shot on net for the remainder of the game, a span of 37 minutes. Trying to hold on in the final minute, Husic played a booming ball from beyond midfield that sailed over the head of the Red Storm back line. Reimet was able to catch up with the ball, took a touch, and easily slipped a shot past a diving Bower to put the finishing touches on the Hawks' first victory over the Johnnies since 2004.
Head Coach Kylee Flynn Postgame:
