Monmouth’s Falls Short at Home Against Pitt, 3-1

Final Score
Pittsburgh 3 (2-0-0)
Monmouth 1 (0-2-0)

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – After falling behind 2-0, the Monmouth women's soccer team got back within a goal before ultimately dropping its home opener to Pittsburgh, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn.

Pitt controlled the majority of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the game and scoring their second in the 36th minute. The Hawks' offense began to create opportunities late in the opening half, culminating in a shot from Evangeline Perdomo that rolled inches wide of the left goal post. Pitt applied heavy pressure in the final minutes of the frame, but two spectacular saves from Tallulah Miller kept the Hawks within a pair at halftime.

Miller continued her momentum into the second period, making another stop in the 48th minute. On the ensuing possession, the Hawks put their first shot on net when Perdomo's effort was denied by Pitt netminder Abby Reisz. The two squads traded attacking chances for the next 10 minutes until Monmouth finally broke through in the 59th minute.

After Miller started the sequence by playing a ball from her own box up to midfield, Loren Gehret dribbled up the right side and found an open Ashley Lavrich at the top of the 18. The All-CAA Preseason Honorable Mention recipient put an arching shot over the head of Reisz for her first score of 2025, cutting the Hawks' deficit to one.

Pitt found the back of the net just three minutes later, going back up by two with just under 30 minutes to play. The Panthers continued to attack, but four saves by Miller over the final half hour kept Monmouth within reach.

The Hawks applied late pressure, highlighted by a Marie Bogue shot that just missed the frame in the 74th minute, but were unable to find the back of the net, falling in the first-ever matchup against Pittsburgh.

Head Coach Kylee Flynn Postgame:

"We were pleased at the way our team competed today against a quality ACC opponent.  This young group continues to have impressive moments, which is very exciting for the future of the program."

Notes:
  • Ashley Lavrich scored her first goal of her sophomore season after netting five a season ago. Loren Gehert picked up the assist on the Monmouth goal, her first point of 2025.
  • Netminder Tallulah Miller made five saves in the second half and tied her career best with seven stops between the pipes on Sunday. She previously had seven in her redshirt freshman season with Kentucky against Tennessee
  • Monmouth falls to 0-1-0 in the all-time series with Pittsburgh
Up Next:
