Late Rally Falls Short for Hawks at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, NY – The Monmouth University baseball team pulled to within one run in the top of the eighth but ultimately fell 8-5 to Stony Brook University in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) action on Friday. 
 
The Seawolves struck first in this one as Stony Brook reached Monmouth starter Kevin Opanel for a two-out run in the bottom of the first. 
 
Stony Brook added a run in the fifth on a Monmouth error and pushed its lead to 2-0. 
 
The Seawolves extended their lead to 6-0 through seven innings. 
 
Monmouth broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth as the Hawks sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs. Back-to-back RBI singles from Casey Caufield and Chris Walsh plated the first two runs. Jay Bant drove in a pair with his double before Chris Andrews reached on an error allowing a fifth run to score.
 
Stony Brook scored three times in the bottom of the eighth and pushed its lead to 8-5. 
 
The Hawks couldn't get anything going in the ninth as the Seawolves claimed victory.

NOTES 
- Stony Brook leads the all-time series with the Hawks 8-3 after Friday's game.
- Jay Bant had two RBIs, which gives him 58 for the season. It's the most RBIs in a single-season by a Hawk since Paul Bottigliero had 58 in 2009. 

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Casey Caufield had a pair of base hits for the Hawks. He has multiple hits in four straight games and a team-best 23 games this season.
- Jay Bant had a pair of base knocks and has 19 multi-hit games on the season. 
- Bant also had a pair of RBIs in the game and now leads the team with 16 multi-RBI games on the season.
- Harry Padden had two hits and 13 multi-hit games on the season. 
- Kevin Opanel had seven strikeouts for the Hawks. It was his second game this season with seven or more strikeouts.
- Nick Rizzo earned the win for Stony Brook after giving up three runs on six hits in 7.2 innings of action.
- Opanel took the loss for the Hawks after giving up five runs, two of which were earned in 6.2 innings of work.
